GRANTEE OF THE WEEK: French Meadow Bakery and Café
French Meadow Bakery and Café has always stressed the importance of sustainability through its focus on locally sourced, organic ingredients. In 2015, French Meadow’s executive chef Samantha Jensen decided to take their commitment to sustainability to the next level. Jensen contacted BizRecycling to find ways to recycle more and to keep food waste out of the trash.
BizRecycling connected French Meadow with local recycling experts. Jensen worked with them to apply for a BizRecycling Grant. The grant covered all the costs for their new and improved recycling programs, including purchasing organics recycling bins, compostable bags, and labels to make bins easy to identify. “The grant was essential in helping us set up a composting program that is great for the environment and our business,” explained Jensen.
Not only did French Meadow receive the equipment for their new organics program, but the recycling experts also provided training for staff. Staff were taught which materials can and cannot be recycled. With training and bins in place, French Meadow Bakery and Café is now diverting about 600 pounds of organic material a week. This amounts to a striking 7,200 pounds a year. Jensen commented that, “Composting and recycling are key pieces that fit in with our values.”
