GRANTEE OF THE WEEK: Saint Croix Hospice
St. Croix Hospice was just finishing an expansion and renovation of their office space when they realized they wanted to do more to recycle. As a tenant of Crossroad Properties, they had already been recycling. The problem was that staff was generating a large amount of waste from one-time use material that was going into the trash every day. This included Styrofoam cups, plastic silverware, and paper bowls and plates.
After applying for a BizRecycling Grant, St. Croix Hospice received funding to assist them in reducing their waste output. The grant covered a new washing machine and durable, reusable service ware. Gloria Barnard, and administrative assistant at St. Croix Hospice, said, “The dishwasher and dishes purchased will add a welcome finishing touch to the renovation of the office, while helping use keep our planet healthy.
To communicate the staff kitchen changes, St. Croix Hospice communicated to staff through email, newsletters, and meetings. With their combined effort, St. Croix Hospice is diverting 250 pounds of waste from the landfill every year. They are also saving about $900 a year in reduced expenditure on disposable material.
