Grand Place Condominium Association had an aging trash compactor. They were also experiencing challenges with their trash hauling service. They wanted to find options to better manage their waste. They reached out to the Recycling Experts at BizRecycling for help.
How We Helped
Our Recycling Experts visited Grand Place to learn more about their waste stream. One big place for waste reduction was adding a composting service to recycle organics.
In order to pay for some much-needed upgrades to their trash room, our Recycling Experts helped the association apply for a BizRecycling Grant. The grant covered the cost of removing the old trash compactor. They also reconfigured the building’s trash chute to become an organics chute and revamped the old trash room to include organics collection.
Our Recycling Experts held an informational meeting for Grand Place Condominium residents to answer recycling questions and address concerns. Residents were given recycling guides. Bins and chutes got new labels, and residents were given compostable bags for collecting their organic waste.
The new organics recycling program has been well received by the residents, with near-100% participation.
Approximately 13,400 pounds of recycling and organics are being diverted from the trash each year. Grand Place is saving over $5,000 on waste hauling each year as a result.
“This was really the coming together of a problem with an opportunity. Our aging compactor, with issues with our previous haulers, necessitated a change. We were able to address this problem with a solution that increases recycling,” said Grand Place’s President Ken Simmons.
