The Emily Program is a nationally recognized organization specializing in personalized, holistic treatment for eating disorders.

Challenge

Hilmar Wagner, Director of Nutrition Services for The Emily Program, wanted to start an organics recycling program. Food is a central part of The Emily Program’s mission and operations.

Wagner believed that embracing sustainability by recycling food waste and non-recyclable paper would be a good fit with the program, but they needed assistance getting started. They reached out to the Recycling Experts from BizRecycling for help.

How We Helped

Our Recycling Expert met with staff from The Emily Program’s different departments to learn about the program and their waste stream. Including staff from treatment, facilities and operations from the beginning allowed options to be discussed and a plan to be made for a recycling program that would work best for the entire organization.

Working with our Recycling Expert, The Emily Program set up organics recycling services at its two facilities on Como Avenue as well as its Anna Westin House on Cleveland Avenue in St. Paul.

The Emily Program created a comprehensive training program for staff. They also followed best practices on pairing their organics, recycling and trash containers.

Outcome

Staff and clients alike appreciate the improved recycling program. Participation has been impressive and overall feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. When staff members in a facility neighboring the Anna Westin House found out about the organics recycling program, they set up bins and began bringing compostable materials over.

In their first year, The Emily Program diverted over 20,000 pounds of organics. With the dedication of staff and clients, this number should continue to grow.
